"Grisaille" is a French word meaning "grayness."
In the art world, it describes a technique where an artist uses varying shades of gray to create an image with depth and a three-dimensional feel. After the grisaille is painted, other colors are layered over it.
While traditionally used as an underpainting in oils, this technique can be adapted for other mediums, such as watercolors or colored pencil.
